My family has been part of the Williams Bay community since the 1930s, and after decades spent exploring Williams Bay, Lake Geneva, and Fontana, this guide highlights true local favorites rather than tourist traps.
This post gives you a quick overview of the towns around the lake with the best local recommendations for what to eat, where to stay, and what to do in Williams Bay Wi.

The Lake Geneva area is one of the top vacation destinations in Wisconsin and is located just about an hour and a half from Chicago, making it a popular day trip or weekend getaway. While many visitors say they are “visiting Lake Geneva,” they are often spending time in one of three towns around the lake: Lake Geneva, Fontana, or Williams Bay, each with its own unique personality
30 second overview of towns around the lake:
Lake Geneva, WI is the main tourist destination at the lake. Visitors flock to this town for the beach, lakeside restaurants, cute main street shopping, and to catch the famous Lake Geneva boat tours. There is a lot to do but it can get crowded especially in the summer or on holidays.

Fontana, Wi is your elegant yet understated friend. This is one of my favorite places to spend the day with my two sons. It is less crowded than Lake Geneva and has beautiful lakeviews, the Fontana beach, our favorite family friendly resort (the Abbey Resort), a pirate ship park, and coffee shops and restaurants both kids and adults will enjoy.

Williams Bay, WI is the local gem. It is a quiet town but still has a cute downtown area with ice cream shops, a smaller (less crowded) beach, a playground on the lake, instagramable ice cream sundaes, the famous Yerkes Observatory, and my favorite lakeside restaurant Pier 290, which is right on the lake.

Where to stay in Williams Bay WI: The American Hotel is a collection of 7 movie themed units in downtown Williams Bay. It just opened in 2026 and is adorable! Each unit is like a small house with living area (with sofa bed), fireplace and then a main bedroom with queen bed, galley kitchen with sink/microwave and mini fridge and bathroom. We stayed at the Breakfast at Tiffany unit and it was beautifully decorated. Plus you can walk to everything! The famous Frosty Moose (ice cream shop) is right next door. You can walk to the coffee shop and rooftop bar The Green Grocer, or to great restaurants like Harpoon Willies, Cafe Calmari or Bay Cooks (or local go to). The lake is only 2 blocks away as well so it’s a win all around!

If you have a group or family the Airbnb Nomad living has a collection of beautiful townhomes (with fun bunk rooms) and these are also within walking distance to everything in Williams Bay.
One of the best resorts around the lake, The Abbey Resort and Avani Spa is only a 10 minute drive away in Fontana if you want the full resort experience (my family’s personal favorite!).
